Getting married in November is always chancy where the weather is concerned but these two had enough adrenalin and love flowing through their veins that they barely noticed anything but one another.

The quaint country setting was behind the Farmhouse next to the garden with a lovely vine covered wooden gate acting as background. The grass was still a vibrant green and the sun accented the beautiful blue sky as it peaked from behind passing clouds. The Farmhouse was warm and inviting with two wood stoves blazing, the smell of cider mulling, and the sound of laughter echoing off the old wooden beams overhead. In the kitchen they busily prepared a gourmet meal for the wedding party and entertained the guest with delightful stories of growing up on the farm.

I just returned from a fabulous road trip visiting with an good friend and the innkeeper of the Middleton Inn, Mary Ann Kuhn. What a pleasure catching back up again. Now with 2 young, fun-loving yellow labs who want all your energy and attention, 5 felines who are sweet, lovely and very daring, and two new horses who make the estate seem much more picturesque – as if it needs anything at all – I was thrilled to see she was so relaxed and happy. Mary Ann graciously arranged for me to stay in her best room “The Ascot” and it was perfect. With a four poster bed that required a stepping stool to get into, and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the large old windows, the stay was everything it promised to be.

Known as “The First Washington of All” the Town of Washington, in the county of Rappahannock, is a quaint and inviting little town of around 135 citizens. The old brick sidewalks and quiet streets, laid out by non other than a young George Washington himself, lead to relatively unknown pastures of sheep and llamas, anirondak chairs precisely focused on the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and Skyline Drive and take you back to a time when life was simple and real.

Although Inn at Little Washington has made this quiet little town well known – often those who visit are still not aware of her charm and the adventure and history that awaits them. All you need do is ask a local, and you will be pleasantly surprised. From chauffeured wine tours to local vineyards and wineries, to fly fishing the many streams and rivers nearby, The Town of Washington can entertain everyone from the adventure seeker to the historical and cultural enthusiast.

The Theater at Washington presents professional chamber music, recitals, jazz and a variety of other light music, humor and drama and is a must if you visit.

Don’t forget to visit the numerous artists and craftsman that occupy the historic and eclectic buildings lining the the quiet, pedestrian friendly streets. Take a bicycle tour of the area or stop by the inn and acquire a driving tour map and spend the day exploring the region, visiting organic farms and taking in a few of the small towns sites along the way.

End your travels with dinner at Inn at Little Washington, and a nitecap at Middleton Inn. Climb into the tall bed, kiss goodnight and fall asleep to the sound of crickets, cows and the soft wind as it blows through the willows and ageless oaks.

Wow – has it been that long since I’ve posted? As an artist, I speak with my photos, paintings, and creative projects. Words do not come easily for me. Social Media is not made for people like me. I’m suppose to have something to say every day. But you really don’t want to hear me everyday I can tell you that. It’s just thoughts and personal opinions and we all have those. So count your blessings that I don’t write often. Instead – I’ll try to show you what I’m up to.

Watching kids play in sprinklers, capturing priceless moments on film and missing the best ones because I cannot be in two places at the same time. Like the mink that ran through the neighborhood last Saturday afternoon. Big and beautiful. Stupid me was on my cell phone talking and forgot that I have a camera on my cell phone I could have captured it with. Oh well. Some of the best photos captured are the ones in my head and heart.

I’m working on a new marketing campaign for Blue Ridge Highlands called “Get a Little Mud on the Tires”. I’m trying to encourage folks, even though gas prices are outrageous, that taking a drive on the back roads of the region is the best way to spend some quality time on vacation. It was remarkable to see after the spring rains we’ve had, just how bold the streams and river’s had become overnight. Pastures are greening up and trees are in full blooms.

Sunday drives are a tradition in my family and one I’m trying to keep going. Although I prefer to do them alone most times and just get out and explore, get lost, and pray I get back home without a flat tire. Mud on my tires is great. An added bonus of sorts. No air in my tire is not so great.

Look for our ads for Blue Ridge Highlands in Blue Ridge Outdoors and Breathe Magazines.

Fall is always my favorite season. I’m not sure if it’s the crisp air, the smell of a wood fire or the crunch of the leaves under my feet as I hike through the vast trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The warm colors that light up the water and reflect like fire and the way the sky turns the mountains from blue to purple excite the senses. I’ve added some new photos to my SmugMug for your enjoyment. Please take a look. Of course you can order prints from the site also.
